Michael G. Carter is Executive Vice President – Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of Northwestern Mutual. In these roles, he is responsible for the company’s financial management functions and enterprise risk management oversight. He has held the CFO role since 2008 and the CRO role since 2019. He also is a member of the company’s Senior Leadership Team.
Carter joined Northwestern Mutual in 1994 as a senior attorney in the Law Department. He became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) that same year and achieved his Fellowship in the Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation a year later. In 2015, he was named CFO of the Year in the private large company category by the Milwaukee Business Journal.
His professional affiliations include the Wisconsin State Bar, American Bar Association, Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Carter received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C., and a law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law, Chapel Hill, N.C.
Born and raised in Delavan, Wis., Carter is committed to the greater Milwaukee community. He currently serves as a board member of both the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County and the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Carter was a longtime cabinet member of both the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County and the United Performing Arts Fund.
He is a past board president of Milwaukee Public Museum, First Stage Children’s Theater and Sojourner Family Peace Center. He is also a former board member of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee (treasurer); HEAR Wisconsin, Inc.; St. Eugene’s School; and the Fox Point Foundation (treasurer).
