Joseph Gates is the Chief Risk Officer for American Family Enterprise Companies. In this role, he has executive leadership for the Enterprise Risk Management division and responsibility for the strategic leadership of all risk management and loss reserving functions for the property and casualty insurance operations including: Operational Risk Management, Model Governance and Model Risk Management, Business Continuity, Corporate Insurance, Capital Management, Loss Reserving and Catastrophe Management. The division is responsible for the definition, execution and governance of the risk framework; risk appetite and tolerance; risk management and reporting; group capital assessment and stress testing; and catastrophe management for American Family.
In his prior role, operating as American Family’s Enterprise Catastrophe Management Director, he was responsible for the enterprise-wide catastrophe risk strategy. Prior to joining American Family, Joseph was the Vice President of Catastrophe Management at Homesite Insurance Group in Boston, MA and was the Head of Global Modeling at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty in Chicago, IL and Munich, Germany.
Joseph has a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Saint John's University in Collegeville, MN.
He and his wife Sharon live in Waunakee, WI with their two daughters.
